Southall Environmental Associates is working with colleagues from the Duke University Marine Laboratory on the Atlantic Behavioral Response study <click here for more information>. We recently coordinated with the US Navy destroyer USS COLE in conducting some much-needed experimental research on the behavioral responses of Cuvier’s beaked whales and short-finned pilot whales off Cape Hatteras, NC. The behavior and movement of the beaked whale subject in this experiment {pictured above – photo credit H.J. Foley, taken under NMFS permit #22156} was monitored before, during, and following a known sonar exposure.
